Play Dates (Next & Past Play Dates)

What is an Adult Play Date?

Many people find the sight of children playing very charming, and it is also very important developmentally. However, adults having a Play Date? I couldn't. What if people saw me. What if I really enjoyed letting go and having fun?

An adult Play Date is an alternative to the everyday club scene, most adult parties, and many socail gatherings. At its base is the encouragement to let go, let your hair down, get rambunctious and playful.

Play is an important part of development for many organisms, and it stimulates imagination, problem solving, and cooperation skills. An ideal adult Play Date is fun for all involved as well as beneficial to the social development of the adults at play. It can become the bases for a new type of "community". "The community that plays together, stays together."

An adult Play Date is an organized period of time during which two or more adults get together to play. Adult Play Dates allow adults to relax , socialize with each other, and enjoy themselves. Anyone can do it.

Tips on Organizing a Play Date

Organizing an adult Play Date is relatively simple, but there are some things to take into account.

  • Make sure to be specific about location and time when you make plans with others.
  • The activities of an adult Play Date may be structured or unstructured. In-door games, board games, show-n-tell, out-door games like tag, soft-ball, splashing in a pool, going to an event like a concert, bowling, pizza, playing pool, biking in the park, a roller or ice skating rink, attending a County or State or a Renessance Faire, a movie at an IMAX theatre or interactive mueums like the Exploritorium in San Francisco or Science Works in Ashland or the Magic House in St. Louis' Children's Museum where attendees are encouraged to explore and interact relatively freely.
  • Encouraging the child within to lighten up and play with friends

Getting started

  • Come to one of our Community Gatherings
  • Call up the people in your area whom you went through a workshop with.
  • Contact us and let us know about your plans if you would like a notice sent out to other graduates in your area.

It's a great environment to explore open hearted, non-sexual intimacy.

Next & Past Play Dates

March 8, 2019 - 8 pm - Bellview Grange, Ashland, OR

Let's get together before 8 pm at the Bellview Grange to see fellow graduate Jessica Sage's play Fragments. Jessica, a long-term resident at Harbin Hot Springs, is now the Artisatic Director at a new theatre company in Ashland, OR, the Rogue Theatre Company. March 8th is opening night to benefit Planned Parenthood with a champagne reception following. It's also my 79th birthday which is actually the start of my 80th year on this planet. Go to https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3607659 for tickets.

September 5, 2015 - 1-3 pm - Dance Space, 280 E Hersey, Ashland, OR

Let's gather to move to the sounds of DJ Heartbeat, aka Lloyd Barde, from Marin County, CA. Lloyd has owned Backroads Music for decades and regularly supplies DJs with their tracks, as he did for me when I lived in Marin. I introduced him to Donna de Lory's incredible music (the best Amazing Grace I have ever heard, which I used as the return music from the vision quest in Father Wound), and he has ended up producing her shows in and around San Francisco when she visits. I can't do the movements that I taught at the Gordon Clay School of Dance (i.e., Healing the Fatherwound Retreats), since my stroke, but I still enjoy the sounds and for anyone who wants to grab a bit or a glass of Kombucha after the dance, I'd love that.

November 28, 2014 - Cirque du Soleil's Amaluma and Tail Gate Party - San Francisco, CA

Thanksgiving Evening - Amaluna invites the audience to a mysterious island governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon.

Their queen, Prospera, directs her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony in a rite that honours femininity, renewal, rebirth and balance which marks the passing of these insights and values from one generation to the next.

In the wake of a storm caused by Prospera, a group of young men lands on the island, triggering an epic, emotional story of love between Prospera’s daughter and a brave young suitor. But theirs is a love that will be put to the test. The couple must face numerous demanding trials and overcome daunting setbacks before they can achieve mutual trust, faith and harmony. See: http://bit.ly/171E2gV and http://bit.ly/1aIMG7f for more. I'm thinking of the $85 seats ($80 for those over 65 and military $75 for kids under 12.) Let me know by October 15th at fatherwound@aol.com

The plan to is get there early and have a Tail Gate party with a full turkey and all the fixins including cranberrys, pumpkin pie, etc. in the parking lot of AT&T Park. Maybe even pilgrims attire. Maybe even a white table clothe and candleabra. Bring left-over Halloween candy to share with others. A true Thanksgiving celebration.

June 1, 2013 - Dance Marin, Corte Madera, CA

First Friday at Yoga Tree, 67 Tamalpais Drive. 7:30-7:30p Yoga, 8:30-11:30 p Dance to DJ Pangea. See more movement opportunities in the greater San Francisco area.

October 28, 2012 - Cirque du Soleil's Quidam, Eugene, OR

Cirque du Soleil proudly presents Quidam — a young girl’s escape into a world of imagination — under a specially adapted arena format at the Matthew Knight Arena.

Preview the Show - 1:28

Quidam (pronounced "key-dam") is a nameless passer-by, a solitary figure lingering on a street corner, a person rushing past and swallowed by the crowd. It could be anyone, anybody. Someone coming or going at the heart of our anonymous society. A member of the crowd, one of the silent majority. The one who cries out, sings and dreams within us all. This is the "quidam" whom this show allows to speak. This is the place that beckons - a place for dreaming and genuine relations where all quidams, by proclaiming their individuality, can finally emerge from anonymity. This is the "quidam" that Cirque du Soleil is celebrating.

Young Zoé is bored; her parents, distant and apathetic, ignore her. Her life has lost all meaning. Seeking to fill the void of her existence, she slides into an imaginary world - the world of Quidam - where she meets characters who encourage her to free her soul. (Sounds a lot like Gordon and Shauna.)

Enough about us. Learn More About the Show

It would be great to get seats together but I don't want to wait too long before all of the good seats are taken. Give me some indication at your earliest convenience and I'd say it would be great to finalize things before August 1. What do you think?

June 8, 2012 - Tito La Rosa, Ashland, OR.

Ancient Andean wisdom teaches us that the earth was made while the creator sang, thus all beings are made of sound, rhythm and harmony. Andean musician, composer, recording artist and sound healer Tito La Rosa returns to Ashland. Through his concerts, flower ceremonies and music classes La Rosa helps reawaken our memories - weaving sounds into frequencies that open the heart and encourage the spirit to soar. La Rosa, a descendent of Quechua Indians of the Peruvian Andes, has spent more than a decade recovering and preserving, studying, and intuiting the ancestral music of Peru. Tito is a Curandero de Sonido – sound healer. When performing ritual and ceremony for healing, he enters into parallel worlds to bring forth sound that elevates the vibration of an individual and allows for healing and balance to occur. Concert at Havurah, 185 Mountain Avenue, Ashland. Tickets sold at SoundPeace $18 advance, $22 at the door "if" it isn't sold out.

March 19, 2012 Donna De Lory at 7:30pm at Yoga of Sausalito. Donna De Lory will be back in town for a more intimate evening. I already have my ticket. I thought those who are interested in having dinner before, we might park at the Yoga Studio and go across the street and have dinner at Sushi Ran. We may need reservations on a Saturday night so I'm suggesting dinner at 6.

Let me know if you want to join me for dinner. Purchase your pickets on the web site. Scroll down to March 19th. Her last performance was sold out and I think this is a small venue. http://yogaofsausalito.com/WorkshopSchedule.html

March 14, 2012 - Girlyman, Felton, CA (near Santa Cruz).

There are bands with fans and then there are those with followings. Girlyman's three-part harmony folk-pop has a following so dedicated that it consistently fills up seats across the country (even in Pistol River, OR near my home) as they pour out heartfelt, poetic lyrics. With their voices perfectly layered, the band's honest songs tell tales of such disparate topics as Easy Bake Ovens, St. Peter's bones, James Dean, D-Day and more. This week, the Atlanta-based quartet takes its act to Don Quixote's at 7:30pm, in promotion of Supernova, the band's highly anticipated new release. Expect soothing soundscapes, biting wit, and lots of eye shadow. <21w/parent. Reserve a ticket in advance! $15. 831-603-2294. 6275 Hwy 9, Felton Map (Note: They do serve dinner but I haven't been able to confirm info around that. I plan to be there in time to do dinner.) - Gordon

September 18, 2011 - Donna DeLory, 10:30am – 1:00pm.. Historic Sweet’s Ballroom, 1933 Broadway, Oakland, CA $15

Join our conscious dance community for this unique journey! Donna will be singing over Baron von Spirit’s electronic beats for select intervals of the journey—and otherwise holding space on the sacred dance floor. Our community spans all ages and encourages all forms of movement expression in a safely held space. Mass Transit always includes a free pre-dance yoga class and donation-based childcare.

Five of us had dinner at Vik's last night and then went to hear Jennifer Berezen, Barbara Borden, Chris Webster and several others perform. It was a great and moving program and it was great getting together to share the evening with friends.

Daft Punk - Lose Yourself to Dance - Burning Man 2013

Why Dance? - Donna Carroll

The Dance on Sunday morning is my spiritual practice. It is my prayer. It is my playground and my therapy. The dance floor is my teacher. As I allow my personality to dissolve in the presence of the dance, I begin to notice the Spirits around me housed in human bodies. As I let go of past stories and future desires, my body is taken on a ride by the music. Slowly, I start to feel whole again. Dropping deeper into my breath, listening to the beat of my heart as it synchs up with the beat of the music that echoes the beat of the universe, I feel held. Embraced by the safety of gravity and the feel of the sweat-stained wood beneath my callused feet as I move, I close my eyes and let go. My senses become so acute that I hear everything – the sound of the music pulsing out of the speakers, scratches of feet caressing the floor, shrieks of children laughing, roars of sirens passing by… I open my eyes and see the golden yellow sunlight falling onto distorted oblong boxes on the floorboards, the candles from the altar I created that morning softly flickering, the sun’s reflection on the bowl of water shiny like a new toy. My nose turns to the particular scent of the ballroom – an intoxicating mixture of musky ancientness, palo santo, and dirty gym socks, which gets mixed with the scents of hugs – rose oil, dryer sheets, sweat, chocolate, coffee, firewood, shampoo… I inhale it all into my lungs as if I would wither and die without it, welcoming the humanness of our bodies as they collide in community.

How do I start?

1. Go at your own pace
2. Be responsible for your own body (stay aware of injuries and limitations)
3. Keep your eyes open to stay aware of others
4. Dance barefoot or in clean shoes only - no socks on the floor
5. Move how you feel and stay open to changing
6. Know that everything that is alive has a dance, and your only task is to find and express yours
7. Enjoy yourself! (Excessive seriousness may slow you down)

Where are dance communities in the Bay area?

Berkeley - Barefoot Boogie, freestyle dancing in a creative community space. Boogie is a Sunday night freestyle dance in a casual, friendly environment where you can dance and express yourself freely, a healthy alternative to the club scene, a space that’s free of smoke and alcohol and is ear-friendly. We are a scent-free environment as some of our dancers are allergic to scented products. Rather than a non-stop electronic beat, our deejays play a wide range of music that will move you on many levels. Real music for real people! On any given night at Barefoot Boogie, you’ll probably hear Latin, African, Middle Eastern, funk, pop, R&B, hip-hop, house, blues, downtempo electronica, electro-swing, jazz, and more. You’ll hear some things that are familiar, whether current radio hits or favorite "oldies," some that are new and unfamiliar, and some things that may even surprise you. You may find yourself dancing to things you never expected you’d dance to. You can dance alone, with a partner, or even with a group of people depending on the mood of the moment. Barefoot Boogie is a place where you can do your own dance in a creative, connected community space. We hope you'll join us! No smoke, no alcohol, no scents, no pretense. Over the course of an evening class, we move through many different places. As we use our bodies to explore the map of the five rhythms (Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness), we develop an intimate relationship with the energy that animates our daily lives. This class is for anybody who wants to engage with the teachings of this practice. Using gentle guidance, focused exercises and a sense of humor, along with a deep respect for our humanness, we apply the innate qualities of each rhythm to a different theme each week. Estatic Dance. (Previoiusly Mass Transit), Ecstatic Dance is one of the largest weekly conscious dances in the greater San Francisco Bay Area where people from all walks of life convene to celebrate life, to heal, to move and connect through dancing and music. The sacred space is enhanced through two very simple guidelines: “no talking on the dance floor” and “respect the space and one another.” Sunday morning. Walk up the stairs. Notice the sunlight streaming through the windows onto the 8,000 sq ft sprung-wood dance floor at Tropicana Ballroom. See kind faces of those you know and those you have yet to meet. Take a deep breath and relax into the flowing music. Visit the nondenominational altar. Glide back to the dance floor as the musical guide, the DJ, begins to awaken the dancers with a stronger beat. Listen deeper to your heart, and hear the reflection in the music. Allow the music, the space, the people, to wash over you as the journey unfolds. Laugh, play, cry, skip, twirl, fly, and sashay around—knowing any expression and all movement are welcomed and encouraged in the space. All ages, genders, people of color, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex & same-gender loving movers welcomed. Leave feeling really good, both inside and out. Even more

Dance Intimate: We explore our relationship with the body as a dancing shape field moving in space.

Dance Communion: The dancer begins to open his (her) field to association and inspiration to one other.

Dance Community: Dancers begin to move in ever widening circles, receiving, giving information and inspiration to the larger dance happening all around them. This landscape is an invitation to see how we are all connected.

Dance Infinite: What happens on the dance room is a practice for the everyday dance in the living world. We move out from the dance room with an opportunity to send outward all benefit. we may have received.

Three Points of View

Pause Presence: It is a place of quiet alertness. A practice that allows the dancer to relax, slow down and restore.

Orbit Orientation: The dancer is encouraged to consciously move in all directions with equal attention and without preference.

Echo Inspiration: The dancers are guided to use each other’s dance to inform and inspire them. It is a constant personal contribution to the pool of movement choices.

DJs

Alxndr

Alxndr enjoys taking dancers on a journey with his DJ sets. Starting off with dreamy downtempo, moving into world beats, funky midtempo, glitchy basslines, and on to faster breakbeats, only to come in for a landing with luscious melodies, it’s all part of the ride. He is part of the False Profit crew, and co-founder of the TransportedSF bus adventures. www.alxndr.dj

Baron von Spirit

Baron von Spirit is a true dancer’s DJ, drawing on a lifetime of movement study & practice for his musical inspiration. He’s known for his eclectic and wide-ranging taste, but even more so for searching out songs that are fresh and unique. To each set he brings a rough palette of musical ideas–the final journey is created as a response to what he is feeling in communion with the field of dancers–and always finds a way to integrate a few novel remixes of beloved classics. Spirit plays regularly at Dance Journey, Harbin’s Unconditional Dance, and NCDC Dance Camps, as well as other special events in Northern California. He co-founded HeartSpace, a community dance in Fairfax. baronvonspirit@gmail.com

Alia

ALIA, formerly known as Bombgoddess and affectionately dubbed “The Sonic Shamaness”, weaves an intoxicating, luscious blend of glitchy, liquid, globally infused temple step, melodic crunk, and bassy whomp to create a pulsating, exotic journey into rhythm and movement with her signature goddess spark and a shaman’s touch.

Transmitting the bliss she feels in performances, ALIA unlocks an ecstatic, activated, textured, lush and prayer-full experience that evokes the sacred and awakens our connection to our source. She is a dancer and a priestess devoted to embodying the feminine and she approaches every set as a ritual and as a facilitator of dance floor unity.

ALIA unleashes her musical alchemy at cutting-edge events from the underground Bay Area dance scene to Burning Man. DJ Dragonfly – Global Bass Culture

Decades of playing, performing and collecting music and dance, and a deep immersion in the music & events business are the fertile grounds for unleashing some of the most creative sets on today’s underground U.S. West Coast dance scene. As a DJ who constantly breaks the mold with a unique amalgamation of bass culture’s most embraced genres: Dubstep, Glitch, Downtempo, Trap, Breaks, House and Drum n Bass, his sets are a wicked infusion of tempo and sound design, which are then given a massive workover by urban/indigenous Third World whomp and ecstatic bass music. Now in his second decade on the West Coast festival and club circuit, he has performed with many of the dance scene’s most pioneering and resilient producers: Bassnectar, Tipper, Ott, Krafty Kuts, Opiuo, Phuture Primitive, Gaudi, Vibesquad, Freq Nasty, Adam Freeland, Cheb I Sabbah, Bluetech, Karsh Kale, Heavyweight Dub Champion, Random Rab, Starfire, Nickodemus, Dreadzone, and many, many more! SF Bay Area dance enthusiasts consistently place him in the top percentile at the DJ polls for his unique sounds, enhanced by added live percussion. As a full time DJ, music and event producer he is found booking, producing, DJing and creating content throughout the West Coast electronica event, festival and club scene. Internationally, his portfolio includes Egypt, Costa Rica, Hong Kong, Canada and Australia. Past and current bookings/projects include: Earthdance Festival, Harmony Festival, Beloved Festival, Enchanted Forest, Burning Man, Mystic Garden Gathering, Shambala, SolFest, Techno Tribal, Bioneers, Sea of Dreams, Groove Garden, Symbiosis, Eclipse 2012, Wanderlust, Worldly Sights & Sounds, Ecstatic Dance, Yoga Journal Conference, Wanderlust Festival, Beloved Festival, ANDC, Stilldream Festival, Raindance Festival, Envision Festival, Harbin Hotsprings, the West Coast yoga circuit and much, much more. 415.596.2081 connect with him at https://www.facebook.com/Martin.DJDragonfly or djdragonfly@gmail.com

Lachlan Scotland

The intention: uplifting and inspiring people though music. The desire: to set free hearts, minds and feet, though dance. The offering: to be an open channel for the mother, spreading her voice through electronic beats, linking our Ancestors’ rhythms from the past, and melding with the future frequencies of today. May we all come together to activate our highest purpose. May we all move together as one body prayer. May we praise the creator with every cell of our being and unite in common rhythm. As the dawning of the new age is upon us, the mission of unity and oneness is all pervasive. The path of the neo-shaman shows up in many functions and DJ’ing is this one’s calling. Emerging from the vibrations of San Francisco bay area, blending tempos, genres, and syncopated rhythms to create an abundant journey of sound. Lachlan’s DJ path has lead him the world over, exploring the ever-unfolding richness that life has for us all. DJLachlan@gmail.com

Sharu

Sharu’s first spiritual awakening occurred while dancing on a dry desert dance floor two years after he started DJing in 2000. Since then he has been merging ancient and electronic technologies to facilitate awakenings through dance. Since 2007, Sharu has toured the west coast with The Bliss Bar (A next level Kundalini Yoga raw food cafe) creating playfully profound performances with sound, shrines and raw chocolate.

Sharu continually expands his sound to evolve with the times. He plays a wide range of music from juicy sacred atmospheres to delicious global beats to gypsy circus whomp to retro remixes to funky fierce mid-tempo breaks. As a Vedic Astrologer, timing is at the crux of his methodology. His sensitivity to the moment and it’s celestial influences on human consciousness informs the choice of music he plays. He is also deeply versed in Mantra Yoga and utilizes this powerful science of sound with his clients, in his yoga classes and, of course, on the dance floor! Recently, Sharu birthed Sound Seed Yoga from all these technologies, which combines chanting, Kundalini Yoga and meditative dance into ecstatic dance. www.sharuproductions.com or www.facebook.com/djsharu

    I went to church, but God wasn’t there;
    I said everybody’s prayers
Till something deep inside me cried,
“I need the beat to be satisfied.”
I got off my knees and on my feet
Took my rock & roll prayers back on the street.
    I gotta dance, Gotta dance.
